Lightning II sets record at 54 mph

The showstopper was Lightning II, which in its debut broke the two-wheeled racing record with a speed of 54 mph. Built by Tim Brummer, Don Guichard, and Chris Drieke of the original White Lightning group (they were the first to break 50, 55, and 60 mph barriers with their hexel and aluminum tandem), the vehicle is the heavyweight of featherweights. Sporting gull-wing doors and a Snoopy nose (made of Nomex and Kevlar), the contraption weighs a mere 38 pounds.
