Pete Penseyres, you just rode your Human Powered Vehicle for 24 hours. What are you going to do now?

“I’m going to take a shower and then go to sleep — in that order.”

It was easy to understand why Penseyres, 53, was in dire need of rest.

Starting on Friday and finishing Saturday, he pedaled his HPV 601.3 miles to shatter the 24-hour HPV world record of 562.297 in The Bakersfield Californian Human Powered Vehicle Challenge at Mesa Marin Raceway.

Penseyres’ record is unofficial, pending certification by the HPV records committee, HPV Land Events vice president Andrew Letton said. He said he anticipates the mark will be approved within a month.
